What to Know About Crate Training Your Dog
Some pet owners are reluctant to place their dog in a kennel crate, but there are benefits to doing so. If managed appropriately, a kennel crate can be used to make a happier pet and a happier pet owner.
Benefits of Crate Training
Kennel crates are commonly used as a tool to housebreak dogs. This works as dogs are naturally uncomfortable about soiling the place that they sleep in. Additionally, kennel crates offer dogs an enclosed, den-like space. If dogs are introduced to kennels at a young age, this den-like space can become a dog’s preferred resting place. Kennel crates also can prevent destructive habits that a dog might form and a convenient means to transport your dog when traveling.
Things to Remember When Crating Your Dog
- Provide your pet with comfortable bedding. A blanket or towel should suffice.
- Depending on how long your pet will be in the crate, be sure to give it food and water. Use your best judgment, but as a general rule, two hours or more is too long to leave your pet without water.
- Give your dog toys and treats to play with while in the crate.
- Keeping the crate near you when you are home reduces your dog’s anxiety when you are gone.
- Puppies under 9 weeks should not be crated.
