The Poodle
One of the most recognizable of all dog breeds, the Poodle is also perhaps one of the most varied breeds of household dogs. Poodles can come in all sizes, from the majestic Standard Poodle, which can stand over 15 inches at the withers, to the tiny Toy Poodle, which stands under 10 inches at the withers. All poodles are notable for their intelligence and grace, which make them popular as both sporting dogs and household pets.
Behavior
The poodle is an intelligent and highly instinctual breed. Even Toy Poodles, long removed from their hunting roots, will often point to birds. As a result of their energetic demeanor and high intelligence, poodles will often become restless if they are not frequently exercised and intellectually engaged. They often show a restless creativity that will manifest itself in mischief, such as stealing socks and shoes. Their combination of grace and intelligence has also made them excellent at learning and performing tricks.
Like most breeds derived from hunting stock, poodles are very fond of people and are eager to please. They are very fond of children, and as such make excellent family pets. Poodles are also known for their ease in housebreaking.
Health
One of the health problems peculiar to poodles is Addison’s disease, which is a potentially fatal condition that can cause a dog to seem lethargic and behave as though it is suffering from gastric problems. Like many breeds, hip dysplasia is not uncommon in poodles, and can result in movement problems and eventually lameness. Poodles may also suffer from thyroid problems and epilepsy.
