The Great Dane

One of the most instantly recognizable dog breeds, the Great Dane is marked for its enormity and beauty. One of the tallest breeds (their only real competition being the Irish Wolfhound), Great Dane males are usually over 30 inches at the withers, with firm, muscular frames and noble, dignified heads. They are an old breed, having been kept during the Renaissance era as court dogs.

Behavior

The Great Dane’s size and intimidating muscularity belie its gentleness and easy-going demeanor. Often called “the Apollo of dog breeds,” the Great Dane is tall, well-formed, and handsome. They come in a wide variety of coat colors and patterns, ranging from fawn to blue to black, and even “harlequin,” typified by a mottled black pattern.

Great Danes are usually very kind, selfless animals, with an affinity for people as well as other pets. Like all animals, they should be supervised around children, but as a rule, they are sweet-tempered and protective. This quality makes them excellent guard dogs.

Because of their size and low metabolism, Great Danes require exercise and activity. Though they can seem sluggish and lazy due to their size and gentleness, it is important for their health that they receive a good amount of exercise.

Health

Like most dogs of their size, Great Danes have some fairly particular ailments. They are prone to bloat, a painful gastric illness that can involve a twisting of the stomach and may be fatal. Another common problem is hip dysplasia, which can result in lameness if it progresses. Other size-specific ailments such as heart problems can reduce their lifespan. Although Great Danes tend to live between 8 and 10 years, responsible care can extend their lifespan to 12 to 14 years, a common lifespan for smaller dogs.
