The German Shepherd
German Shepherds are large and strong dogs. On average, German Shepherds are 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh from 77 to 85 pounds. They are often used as working dogs. They are loyal and courageous, as well as bold, fearless and alert. These characteristics make them great pets, beyond their many abilities as working dogs.
- Exercise
- German Shepherds enjoy strenuous activity and like it when paired with some sort of training. These are very intelligent dogs that enjoy challenges. To keep your German Shepherd active, you can:
- Take them on daily walks or runs
- Let them run next to you while you ride your bike
- Play fetch with a ball or Frisbee
Daily walks will satisfy the dog’s migration instincts as well as keep them from being restless or destructive.
Health Problems
Due to indiscriminate breeding, certain hereditary issues have arisen in German Shepherds. These issues include:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Blood disorders
- Digestive problems
- Epilepsy
- Chronic eczema
- Keratitis
- Dwarfism
- Flea allergies
