The Bulldog

Famous in legend for the tenacity and dogged perseverance that led the British Empire to identify itself with the animal, the Bulldog has a long tradition as a family pet. Idiosyncratic in appearance to the point of being instantly recognizable, the grunting, muscular, and loose-skinned breed is one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States and Britain. Although known for its stubbornness and willful personality, the breed is kept almost exclusively as a family pet.

Behavior

The Bulldog has been bred for generations as a loyal and sweet-tempered family pet. Compact and muscular with a short coat and a flat face, the dog’s appearance belies its docility and easy-going nature. This is not to deny that the Bulldog can occasionally be stubborn and willful, although the seemingly contradictory qualities help explain the breed’s popularity. The breed tends towards sweetness and friendliness and rarely barks. Additionally, Bulldogs tend to be easy-going and need little walking, making them ideal as house pets.

Physically, the Bulldog usually weighs around 50 to 70 pounds and stands about 12 to 16 inches at the withers. Their hair is short and their tales are curly.

Health

Because of the uniqueness of the breed, there are certain health problems unique to the Bulldog. The strange shape and shortness of the head often result in breathing problems. Bulldogs often grunt when breathing heavily and tend to snore loudly.

Bulldogs are often frequently troubled by eye problems, hip issues (which is fairly common in dogs of similar sizes), and leg problems. Unlike other dog breeds, though, the bow legs of Bulldogs usually prevent hip dysplasia. Bulldogs usually live around eight years, although this can be extended through exercise, healthy diet, and trips to the vet.
