The Boxer
Descended from the ancient and now-extinct Bullenbeiser and the English Bulldog, the muscular and attentive Boxer has grown to become one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, frequently placing near the top of the list of most registered breeds put out by the American Kennel Club. Known for its powerful jaws, broad chest, and unfailing loyalty, the Boxer has earned its place as one of the country’s most beloved family pets.
Boxer Behavior
The Boxer exhibits an unusual mixture of fondness and reticence. While they are exceptionally friendly and loving towards members of their own family, they can be shy or untrusting of strangers. For this reason, they are popular as guard or watch dogs. However, this occasional wariness is tempered by a genuinely sweet nature that makes it a great dog for families with young children. Boxers tend to be very protective of their family and will challenge perceived intruders. This being said, they are also very playful and have high spirits.
While not known for their ability to remember and process commands, the Boxer is intelligent in its own way, usually inquisitive and strong-willed. While it ranks near the middle of the pack for traditional dog intelligence, Boxer owners are quick to defend the idiosyncratic smarts of their pets.
Boxer Health
Most dog breeds have ailments particular to them, and the Boxer is no exception. Like many other dogs with deep chests, they tend towards bloat, a painful and possibly life-threatening twisting of the stomach which must be quickly addressed if it is to be corrected. Hip dysplasia is common as well, which involves an improper meeting of the hip socket and the femur and can eventually result in lameness. Heart diseases are not unusual, another issue related to the size of the animal. Boxers can be expected to live between ten and twelve years, although frequent vet visits and a healthy diet and exercise regimen can increase this time frame.
