Staph Dermatitis
Does your pet have itchy, red skin that is localized in several or just one problem spot on its body? It is easy to disregard these areas as “hot spots” that are a product of compulsive chewing and bad behavior. However, they can also be a sign of a more serious problem called dermatitis.
Dermatitis itself is a relatively benign disorder which can be treated with certain products and a good deal of persistence on the part of the owner. But the real threat behind hot spots which are caused by untreated dermatitis is the development of a staph infection in your pet. If your pet has developed signs of a staph infection, contact an Austin vet right away.
How to Spot Staph Infection
A staph infection is an infection caused by a group of bacteria commonly found on the skin called Staphylococcus. Staph is normally alive on the skin of animals and humans and remains dormant on healthy skin. Staph only becomes a serious problem when the skin is irritated such as it is when dermatitis develops.
When trying to spot a staph infection on your pet, look for:
- A red area with a pimple-like pustule in the center
- A circular, reddish area with a crusty edge
- Hair loss
It is possible for a staph infection to be confused with ringworm, but if these signs develop, it is vital that you take your pet to the nearest vet as soon as possible.
