Shaving Your Pet for the Summer
Many pets have long hair and their owners love it. While it can look beautiful when brushed out and clean, in the summer it can be a danger to the pet. The fur, if it is too thick, can trap heat close to the dog’s body and make life very uncomfortable.
Many northern breeds like Malamutes and Huskies have fur that is designed to keep the animal warm in sub-zero temperatures. As great as the insulation is during the winter, it is a hindrance in the summer. If a dog is uncomfortable in the heat and removing a lot of fur via brushing doesn’t seem to give the poor animal any relief, shaving the dog might be the best move.
Some fur is good for the dog. It shields the dog’s skin from the sun and insulates the dog from the heat. This is important because dogs don’t use sweat to cool themselves off the way people do. Because of this, they don’t need exposed skin.
If you do decide to shave your dog, be sure to leave about an inch of fur. Leaving an inch will leave the sun protection intact and prevent the dog from getting a sunburn. Any groomer should be more than willing to shave the dog.
Even with a shaved dog, it is important to be aware of the heat. Don’t leave the dog in a parked car or outside unsupervised for long periods. When your dog is outside, he or she will still need plenty of shade and water.
