Puppies and Chew Toys

Whether it is your best pair of shoes or your nice new sofa, it is never a good feeling to have your young puppy destroy one of your possessions. The root of your chewed up catastrophe may be that your puppy is cutting their teeth so they are looking for anything to chew on that will sooth their teething gums.

Choosing Toys

Look for toys that are rubber and durable. The rubber material will be soothing to sore gums, as well as durable against growing sharp teeth. Avoid toys that look like objects you do not want your puppy to chew on, like shoes.

More is Better

Providing your pup with a variety of toys is a great way to fight off boredom and discourage chewing on inappropriate items like furniture. It also means that he or she will have more options before turning to things left laying on the floor.

Safety

Teething puppies will chew on practically anything that makes their teething gums feel better, which seems to be anything in sight. Some regular household items can pose a dangerous threat, however.

Electrical cords and cables are particularly dangerous. They are prime targets for young puppies because they are both rubbery and flexible, making great gum soothers. Unfortunately, a puppy could electrocute or strangle themselves while chewing on something like television wires. Keep them taped to the wall or suspended from the puppy’s reach.
