Primates as Pets
Almost everyone has a moment of weakness when they see a baby monkey. Their oversized eyes and unkempt fur can easily persuade people to adopt a baby monkey as a pet. Although primates are very intelligent and special animals, it is important to remember that they are still undomesticated and may not be right for every home. Monkeys become sexually mature when they are 18-24 months old and can turn violent or aggressive toward their owners and visitors.
Problems with Primates as Pets
Primates need a great amount of attention and can sometimes develop behavioral problems if they are deprived of the care and habitat that they need. It is important to remember:
- Monkeys need a lot of attention from their owners and do not take to new people very well
- Primates are expensive to care for, as many require special diets
- Monkeys are illegal in many states and are partially-banned in Texas
- Primates can pass many diseases to humans, including herpes B
- Babies grow up and can become aggressive, often biting their owners or visitors
- Many monkeys cannot be fully toilet trained and can be messy
- Primates need a large, secure area to grow up in
Taking care of a primate can be an extremely difficult task and those thinking of owning a monkey should speak with an expert about the care and investment these animals require.
