Pet Tarantulas

There are over 800 different species of Tarantula and most are split into two different classes – “old world” from the Eastern Hemisphere and “new world” from the Western Hemisphere. It is important that you understand the differences between these spiders before choosing the right one for you.
Even though they are fairly low maintenance, getting a pet Tarantula is a big decision and you should know everything you can before purchasing one. If you have any questions, contact your local Austin Veterinarian Clinic today.
What You Should Know
Tarantulas can make wonderful pets, but there can be some dangers associated with owning one. They do have venomous bites with toxicity similar to a bee or wasp sting, but they are not typically fatal. Even though owners are known to handle their pet Tarantulas, professionals’ advise against it because there is a chance that the spider could be dropped and killed.
Some basic tips for caring for a Tarantula include the following:
- Females are a better choice than males because they live longer
- They should be housed in cages that provide them with sufficient room to move around
- Cages should be kept in a dark area of the room
- Typically, Tarantulas eat crickets or other small insects once a week
Tarantulas are wild animals but if you care for them properly, they can be a low-maintenance pet and natural conversation starter.
