New Cat, Meet Old Cat
Helping a new cat become accustomed to new environments can take time and patience even in ideal conditions. If you are bringing a cat or kitten into a home where another cat already resides, the situation can definitely be tense. There’s no need to be afraid, however; even if cats do not get along at first, they can learn to tolerate each other or even become friends. The following tips may help:
- Introduce your new cat slowly. Most animals would feel threatened by a stranger showing up in their territory (humans included). When your new cat comes home, you may want to keep him or her confined to one room, or one part of the house. Be sure to visit daily so your new pet does not feel isolated.
- Spoil your old cat. He or she will likely sense the new cat’s presence, including a new scent on your clothes. Make sure both cats get plenty of attention and affection so they do not feel they have to compete with each other.
- After enough time has passed, if your older cat seems comfortable enough with the presence of the newcomer, try switching. Keep your older cat confined in one part of the home, especially if it’s a favorite place of his or hers. Allow the newcomer to explore your home.
- Gradually allow the two cats to meet each other. If they show hostility, such as hissing or swiping with their claws, separate them quickly. You may try re-introducing them in a day or so.
The most important thing to keep in mind is the necessity of patience. Two cats can come to accept each other’s behavior, even if it takes some time.
