Massage Therapy for Small Animals
Massage is commonly used as a form of therapy to reduce stress and help with general body function in humans. Just as with humans, deep massage for animals offers many benefits which can add to the health and happiness of a pet’s life.
Why is Massage Therapy Necessary?
Small animals can hide pain surprisingly well. They can even fairly easily adapt to life without the use of certain body parts such as feet or legs. But despite the fact that an owner may not be able to openly detect the pain and discomfort in a pet, the animal may still be experiencing it and as a result adapting to a life filled with excruciating pain.
Animals are in many ways the equivalent of human athletes. Their bodies are designed for optimum performance so that they can easily hunt for food. Think about a dog at a dog park. It is moving at full force, catching balls, running after other dogs and turning on a dime when called. All of this work can result in serious muscular issues in the animal. Knotted muscles can change a pet’s behavior and affect its desire to play, sleep or even eat.
There are certain methods that trained animal massage therapists use to detect areas of pain in an animal. They then use special massage techniques unique to the physiology of small animals to provide relief from chronic pain.
