Large Dog Breeds
The American Kennel Club generally classifies large dog breeds as those with an average shoulder height of near 24 inches, or two feet. This includes over fifty different breeds, with dogs of all origins, temperaments, and appearances. These dogs all have at least one thing in common: size. Large dogs require specific care and environments in order to thrive and enjoy a healthy life as a pet. As a pet owner, you may be looking for a large dog for a number of different reasons. No matter the reason, it is important for your pet’s health and happiness that they live in a suitable environment.
Many people purchase large dogs for intimidation or protection. A large animal barking at the door may be a huge deterrent for a would-be criminal. Certain large breeds have been bred specifically for their protective nature. Breeds like the Giant Schnauzer and the Rottweiler are often bred and purchased for protective purposes. These dog breeds have natural protective instincts that can be used and trained to defend your home.
But not all large dog breeds are protective or likely to be natural protectors. Breeds like Great Danes are known for their energetic and kind attitudes, not for aggressive behavior. The dogs make great pets and companions for families. It is important to know the attitude and demeanor of your dog before purchasing it.
Almost all large dogs need space to roam to maintain good health. For this reason, apartment settings may not be the best environment for a large dog if an owner cannot provide regular outdoor exercise. Large dogs, like all animals, can suffer from health issues, including obesity, if they do not have healthy exercise and eating habits.
