Kinkajous as Pets

Whether you call it a kinkajou, honey bear, or nightwalker, there is no denying just how adorable these rainforest mammals are. Kinkajous are small, arboreal animals that are native to Central and South American rainforests. These exotic animals also make incredible pets, if you do not mind their nocturnal schedule.

Kinkajous, which generally grow to a body length of about two feet, not including their prehensile tails, are roughly the same size as a small house cat. These animals, which are amazingly adept climbers, will spend much of their waking hours exploring their environment and moving from place to place. But unlike many pets, kinkajous are not quick or swift movers. Kinkajous can be described as gentle and careful animals.

Your home will make a fine environment for a kinkajou, but for the comfort and safety of your pet and the cleanliness of your home, it is important to have an enclosure for your pet. If this is an outdoor environment, it is important that it is well contained because kinkajous can easily escape from many enclosures.

Kinkajous can live long and fruitful lives if they are well kept and fed. In fact, a kinkajou can live for up to 25 years! It is important to feed your pet a steady diet of fruits and eggs. It is best for kinkajous to avoid strawberries, avocados, chocolate, and anything with caffeine. If you are considering becoming a kinkajou owner, make sure that you can provide your pet with adequate shelter, food, and attention.
