Iguana Care

Though iguanas may seem like strange animals to have as pets, they are actually not that uncommon. Many
young children who are fascinated by reptiles will take great joy in having a pet iguana. These lizards
typically have a lifespan of up to 10 years, so they will remain in a child’s life as he or she grows
and matures. With attentive and proper care, iguanas can even surpass this expected lifetime and live
into their teens – or even their 20s.

Iguanas require much more extensive care than you may expect. Like a dog or a cat, they will require
daily attention, so you should be prepared for this before you decide to purchase an iguana. These daily
chores are not terribly labor-intensive, but they are necessary if you wish for your iguana to live
a long, healthy, and happy life.

First, you will want to house your pet in a terrarium of some sort. Make sure that it is placed in an
area where your iguana will be able to receive ample sunlight. It is also recommended that you purchase
a basking lamp and a UVB ray producing light, and use them sufficiently. You should also install and
use a thermometer to manage the cage’s temperature.

The cage should be cleaned out daily. Use hot water only, as other chemicals can be quite dangerous
to your pet. By sticking rough bark and wood into the cage, your iguana will be able to maintain its
nail length. Also place a shallow bathing pool into the cage – iguanas love water.

You should initiate human contact with your pet at a young age. If both you and your iguana become comfortable
with you holding it, you significantly lessen your risk of being scratched or clubbed with the tail.
Also, allow your iguana to bathe on a regular basis in your bathtub. This is a hygienic procedure that
your pet will thoroughly enjoy.
