Ich

Has one or more of your fish started acting a little strange? Are they swimming strangely and covered it white dots? If so, your fish may be suffering from the most common fresh water fish disease in captive fish.

Untreated Ich will lead to death of affected fish. But more alarmingly, it can infect the other fish it is around. One fish with Ich can lead to an outbreak in your aquarium. Ich can be the aquarium equivalent of the black plague. If your fish seems to be suffering from Ich, contact your Austin Vet Clinic today for more information.

Symptoms of Ich

The tell tale sign that your fish is suffering from Ich is the obvious white spots that cover its body. These spots give the appearance that someone took a salt shaker to your fish’s body. But there are other symptoms to look out for.

These symptoms are important to look for as the faster you notice Ich, the better the outlook is for both that individual fish and the tank as a whole. These symptoms include:

  • Small white spots that look like larger salt particles
  • Scratching of the body against rocks and gravel
  • Lethargy in the advanced stages
  • Redness or blood streaks as the disease advances

Ich can be treated in a number of different ways. Going to your local pet supply store and asking about how to proceed is your best bet. They will probably direct you to numerous Ich treatment supplies.
