Heat Stroke in Dogs

Dogs love to be active and most will gladly run, wrestle and play for hours on end even in the hottest of weather. But, like people, dogs can easily become overheated and prone to heat stroke if left in the hot sun too long. But unlike people, dogs cannot warn others of the way they are feeling and thus heat exhaustion often goes undetected in dogs until it is too late.

It is extremely important that, as a responsible pet owner, you are aware of the physical state of your dog when it is playing or even lounging in very hot weather. To find out more about heat stroke and heat exhaustion in canines, contact your Austin vet clinic today.

Heat Safety Tips

In order to avoid heat stroke in dogs, check frequently for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as:

  • Heavy panting
  • Hyperventilation
  • Increased salivation early on followed by dry gums as the heat exhaustion progresses
  • Weakness
  • Confusion or inattention
  • Vomiting or diarrhea

If your dog is allowed in the heat of the sun, be sure to provide a good deal of water for drinking and pouring on the dog if it seems to be getting too hot. Certain breeds should not be allowed in the heat for long periods at all. Research the breed of your dog before allowing it outside during the summer.
