Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus or FIV is a wildly misunderstood feline disease. It is a lentivirus that
only affects cats. The virus is similar in some ways to HIV and can, if not treated properly, turn into
Feline AIDS.
Myths about FIV
Many people believe that an infected cat must be put down to put it out of its own suffering as well
as to keep it from spreading the virus. This is, however, typically untrue. A cat infected with FIV
can live a long and happy life. It is necessary to keep the cat indoors to protect it from elements
that could cause it to become sick, as its immune system will be greatly weakened. But for the most
part, owners can treat infected cats in much the same way they would treat any other cat.
Transmission
FIV is actually difficult to transmit from cat to cat and it can never be transferred to other species.
The virus is transferred through deep puncture wounds, usually during fights. So, if your cat is not
excessively aggressive, it can live with other cats without infecting them.
Treatment
There are a number of medications that can be given to felines with FIV but any medication is usually
not necessary unless the animal develops Feline AIDS. If your cat tests positive for FIV, consult your
veterinarian about the various treatment options but do not despair. An FIV diagnosis does not mean
you will lose your beloved companion.
