Errors New Pet Owners Make: Part 1

Never go to a shelter or a pet adoption center unless you have done research on what kind of animal is right for your family, because after you see all those sad puppy dog eyes, you could easily find yourself adopting a pet you are unprepared for.

Finding yourself with a dog that you have no knowledge of and have not prepared for can spell disaster for both you and your pet. When you decide to finally get a new pet, you need to be completely committed to its growth and development; much in the same way you would be when deciding to have a baby.

Just like you would send your children to school, pets also need time to learn how they are supposed to behave and learn how to be friendly with other dogs. Obedience training is essential for your pet if you want to avoid months or years of bad behavior and misunderstandings. Bad habits will develop very quickly, causing problems for both of you.

Another mistake that goes along with not training your animal is being inconsistent with your rules. If you let your dog on the couch “just this once,” it will turn into a habit you will regret. Animals are trying to learn how to please you, so the biggest favor you can do for them is to be consistent with your commands, rules, and love.
