Dry Food or Wet Food?
So, you are at the store trying to figure out what type of pet food to purchase for your new dog or cat. As you look around, you are overwhelmed by the many choices that are available. There are so many variants – ingredients, brands, even consistency. One of the largest decisions you will need to make is whether to purchase dry pet food (in bags) or wet food (in cans). There are pros and cons for each type, which you must weigh before making the best decision for both you and your pet.
Dry Food
There are many upsides to dry food from which both you and your pet can benefit. First, dry food is typically cheaper than wet food, mostly because it comes in bulk sizes, as opposed to single servings. It also tends to be less messy than wet food. Dried-out residue doesn’t accumulate on the bowl, and there is less trash or recycling that you will need to handle. Finally, dry food is harder to bite into, so it tends to clean plaque off of the animal’s teeth, which allows it to maintain better oral hygiene.
Wet Food
Despite the many upsides to dry food, there are those who still live and swear by wet food. Some argue that this medium better parallels the eating habits of an animal in the wild. Others argue that wet pet food contains more nutritional value than dry pet food, which does hold some truth. Many times, dry food loses much of its nutrition as it goes through the processing and drying steps. Because of this, many people choose to mix wet and dry food in an effort to get the best of both worlds.
