Cost of Getting a Dog

Getting a dog can seem like a simple matter. You go to the shelter or look for an ad in the paper. The only question is, which one do you want? However, that question is one of many, and perhaps the easiest one. Before you decide to commit to getting a new dog, you should be aware of the finical costs that this new member of your family will cost.

The first step after picking out your dog is getting it spayed or neutered. If you get it from a shelter, they may do this procedure for you. In other cases, you will have to go to the vet yourself and pay at least $100 for the procedure.

Next you need all the essentials at home, like a dog dish, leash, shelter outside, not to mention food. You should estimate the cost of food to between $20-40 per month, and a little extra is you buy treats and bones. Also keep in mind that your dog will need periodic check ups as well as going to the kennel if you ever go out of town. These things add up quickly.

Having a dog can be a wonderful experience for you and your entire family. However, before you make the decision, make sure you can afford another mouth to feed for the next 9–14 years.
