Canine Distemper
Canine distemper at one time was the leading cause of death in puppies that did not get proper vaccinations. Along with dogs, canine distemper virus (CDV) affects raccoons, skunks, foxes, and other wild animals, and even though vaccinations have greatly reduced the cases of CDV in dogs, it is still a serious threat.
CDV primarily targets young puppies – three to six months old – and especially ones that haven’t been vaccinated. To ensure your puppy doesn’t get CDV, contact your local Austin veterinarian clinic today and speak with a professional.
Signs and Symptoms of Distemper Virus
CDV can easily spread from animal to animal through exhalation and urine or feces. Symptoms of CDV are sometimes confused with other diseases. You can prevent CDV by ensuring your dog receives proper vaccinations. Also, make sure your dog is kept clean. Some of the most common symptoms of CDV include:
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhea
- Trouble breathing
- Increase in body temperature
- Lethargic or weakened behavior
- Depression
- Twitching near mouth and twitching in the legs
- Seizures
One unique symptom is the hardening of foot and nose pads, especially in older dogs. If untreated, CDV can cause death. If your dog is infected with CDV, make sure he or she is kept away from your other pets because it is highly contagious.
