Canine Coronavirus

There are more diseases and disorders that can affect your canine companion than can be easily listed, but there are a number of viral infections that are common and extremely contagious. One of these viruses is the canine coronavirus.

What the Coronavirus Does

The coronavirus causes intestinal disease in dogs. When the virus invades the dog’s body it replicates in the villi of the small intestine. The virus can then cause cell death to the epithelial mucosa where it has multiplied.

The Relation between Coronavirus and Parvovirus

Coronavirus infection is usually relatively mild, causing stomach upset and serious diarrhea. More severe cases may require fluid rehydration at the vet’s office as a result of the diarrhea.

But the real danger associated with coronavirus infection is that the virus makes the dog much more susceptible to parvovirus. The combination of parvovirus and coronavirus can lead to swift death.

The incubation period for the coronavirus is around one to three days and can spread like wild fire from any dog exposed to contaminated feces.

Control

There is a vaccine for coronavirus which is usually only given to puppies and dogs at high risk of exposure. The virus can be easily killed with common disinfectants. The area in which infected animals live should be routinely cleaned with Lysol or bleach. These dogs should also be kept away from other dogs until the virus has run its course.
