Canine Choking Risks

Owners of hyper active canines might feel at times like there is nothing their dogs won’t chew on. But while it may seem like the greatest problem with these dogs is owner frustration, there is another much more important issue when it comes to constantly chewing dogs: that issue is potential choking.

Dogs can die in a matter of minutes if an object–such as a small ball–has become lodged in their throats. To find out more about what to do if your dog is choking, contact your Austin Vet Clinic today.

Steps to Take if a Dog is Choking

Signs that your dog is choking include:

  • The dog running around with its neck stretched out
  • Eyes that are bulging out
  • Head held high
  • Trying to vomit
  • The dog whining in pain
  • Excessive salivating

If you believe your dog may be chocking, do the following:

  • Force open its mouth and check for any objects
  • If the object is closer to the front of the mouth, try to scoop it out
  • If it is deeply lodged attempt the Heimlich maneuver on the animal
  • Seek immediate medical attention

Knowing the signs of choking may save the life of your dog. It is also important to keep small objects away from dogs that are likely to chew them.
