Signs and Symptoms of Pet Bird Mites
Mites are often difficult to detect on pet birds and usually go unnoticed until they have greatly populated on the bird’s body. It is important to routinely check your pet bird for mites in order to catch mite issues early on. This requires you to carefully move feathers up and check for the parasites. They will typically scatter quickly, but you should be able to catch a glimpse of at least one if they are present.
If you see your pet bird engaging in any of the following behaviors, you should immediately check for mites:
- Restlessness
- Excessive preening
- Ruffling of feathers
- Skin irritation
- In more serious cases, evidence of feather damage will be evident
It is vital to your bird’s health as well as the cleanliness of your home that you check frequently for mites.
