Angora Rabbits as Pets

Considered to be one of the oldest rabbit breeds in the world, the Angora rabbit is iconic for its long and soft wool. Originating in Turkey before quickly spreading throughout Europe, the Angora rabbit first came to the United States in the early 20th century and has become popular among families that want a rabbit as a pet. This breed of rabbit is bred for its wool and is often looked at humorously because its fur grows so thick and fluffy.

If you and your family are considering purchasing an Angora rabbit for a pet, it is important to make sure your local veterinarian can care for it. Contact your local Austin Veterinarian Clinic today to speak with a professional.

Caring for Your Angora Rabbit

Most people purchase Angora rabbits for one of two reasons: either for their fur or because of their gentle and loving personalities. You can care for your Angora rabbit by following these guidelines:

  • Provide them with a ventilated cage that is at least three times the rabbit’s size
  • Make sure the housing isn’t exposed to severe weather conditions
  • Do not keep two males together because they are notorious for fighting
  • Clean the cage regularly (every two or three days)
  • Groom them daily to remove loose hair and remove matting with scissors if their coats get to thick.

Make sure you feed your Angora rabbit plenty of fiber. Because of their long hair, many ingest large amounts of fur and it can build up in their stomachs. This can potentially lead to death.
